About Us

If there is a service, there will, most likely, be a Verger.

Vergers arrive early and assist with setting up the Cathedral. The Verger can be found moving furniture to its proper place, making sure the books for the Clergy and Readers are ready to go, working with the Altar Guild to ensure enough bread and wine are supplied, making sure all the Acolyte positions are filled as well as anything else that needs to be done before the service to make sure the liturgy runs smoothly.

During the 10:30AM Eucharist, as well as other services such as Weddings, Funerals and Feast Day services, you will see vergers at various times during the liturgy; most notably at the beginning of the procession. Just as the Vergers arrive early, you will often find them among the last ones out. The Chancel is the Vergers' area of responsibility. So, after the service, the Vergers stay to realign the furniture and Prayer Books and clean up the bulletins. They make sure the Cross and torches are put away and that all the Cathedral valuables are secured.

Whew! All done! - Well, not really... There's still Evensong!
